Leave No Child Inside: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder
Thursday, April 2, 2009
7pm
Seating is limited and tickets ($15) are required
Countryside Community United Church of Christ, 8787 Pacific St.
Lecture, Q and A, and book-signing
So what happened to free-range childhood, and why is it essential that we reclaim if for our children? Why is it essential that we all reclaim that connection?
You camped out in the backyard with your friends, rode bikes through the woods, climbed trees, built forts, splashed through the creek, made mud pies, caught lightning bugs in a jar, chased butterflies, and explored every square inch of the woods and fields and backyards that surrounded your childhood. Why does childhood look so different today?
For many children today, nature is more abstraction than reality; it is something to watch, to consume, to wear---to ignore. Yet there is a growing body of research that links our mental, physical and spiritual health directly to our association with nature---in positive ways.
Bestselling author and journalist Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, explores that complex link between children and nature. In Last Child in the Woods, Louv coins the term “nature deficit disorder” to describe the disconnect between today’s children and nature. Louv’s influential book ignited “Leave No Child Inside” initiatives throughout the country.
Louv is Chairman of the Child and Nature Network, an organization helping to build the international movement to connect children with nature. He will speak at Countryside Community United Church of Christ, 8787 Pacific St. at 7:00 PM on April 2, 2009. Seating is limited and tickets are required. This keynote address is part of the Radical Amazement: The Spirituality of Childhood conference being sponsored by the Center for Faith Studies on April 2-3. Go to www.radicalamazementomaha.org for the entire brochure and complete ticket information or contact Cyndi Kugler at 402.391.0350 x121.
Join us as we contemplate wonder and awe, a human response to nature that is essential for healthy childhood and essential for meaningful life at any age!
